A Brief History of The Toyota Pickup
Toyota Pickup (what the Toyota Hilux was known as in the US) was a compact truck that released in 1968. If you're driving one these days, though, it's most likely from 1984 or later. That was just after the start of the model's fourth generation, when it got redesigned.
The pickup was available as a two- and four-door, with regular and Xtracab extended cab configurations, and with long and short beds. Engine offerings ranged from V6, diesel, and naturally aspirated to turbocharged I4, and features included an independent front suspension, rear-wheel and four-wheel drive (RWD and 4WD, respectively), and four- and five-speed manual and three- and four-speed auto transmissions. The Toyota Tacoma replaced it soon after, however, in 1995.
Common Toyota Pickup Concerns
Over the years, owners have reported experiencing some problems with their trucks, such as:
- Automatic transmission shifting issues on high-mileage models
- Engine stalls on high-mileage models
- Engine not cranking due to starter failure
- Leaking power steering pump
- Manual transmission popping out of gear due to worn shift bushings
