What are Common Problems with Toyota Corolla?

Your Corolla has a legendary reputation for reliability. Service it regularly, and it should last you a few hundred-thousand miles. That means decades of enjoyable driving -- the kind you've come to expect from Toyota.

Popular as the compact car is, though -- people love its fuel economy, road trip-readiness, and sporty ride so much, it comes in a hybrid, the Corolla Hybrid, a spacious hatchback, and a blistering hot-hatch, the GR Corolla -- it's not without the occasional issue over the years.

Here's a few to look out for, and what to do about them.

Faulty EVAP System

Corolla models from between 1998 and 2016 can run into trouble with their evaporative emission (EVAP) systems. At pretty much any mileage, too -- even 200,000 miles or more. If you've got a Check Engine light on the dash, this is likely. Often, it's just a bad charcoal canister or worn-out gas cap. You'll have to replace whatever it is.

Bad Transmission

1990-and-later Corolla models with higher mileages (100,000 miles-plus) can end up shifting hard, or not well at all. The culprit: usually a misaligned throttle position sensor or a faulty solenoid. Replace whatever the trouble is; most of the time, you won't need a total transmission rebuild.

Failed Starter

An engine that doesn't crank means a bad starter, usually. If you're driving a Corolla from between '90 and 2015, one with 100,000 miles or more, it's probably the issue. Sometimes, all you have to do is replace a solenoid, but much of it, you'll have to replace the whole starter.

The best way to stay on top of maintenance, though? Knowing just what to do, and when, and how often. You can learn more about Corolla service from Toyota.
