A Brief History of the Toyota Matrix

Toyota Matrix was a compact car inspired by the Toyota Corolla. The brand released it in 2003, and it ran through the 2013 model year. With a body style that was a cross between a wagon and an SUV, better known as a compact hatchback, the car was more commonly called a sport wagon.

Toyota Matrix Amenities

Initially, the car came in base, XR, and XRS trims, and it offered a selection of 1.8-liter inline-four engines that paired with either manual or automatic transmissions. Features included anti-lock disc brakes, halogen headlights, heated power side mirrors, 16-inch wheels, AM/FM/CD stereo system, leather-wrapped steering wheel, fog lights, moonroof, and a Sport package that tacked on front and rear air dams.

Common Toyota Matrix Problems

Owners have reported some shared issues with their Toyota sport wagon over the years, though. Top concerns include:

  • The "Check Engine" dash light coming on due to an oxygen sensor failure
  • The bolts that attach the front door window glass to the window regulator may come loose
  • Excessive engine oil consumption
  • The engine makes a rattling noise
