The Job of a Shift Knob
You know the shift knob in your Toyota or Scion model well. It's one part of a greater shifter mounted either to the floor or on the steering column, and the shifter is part of the vehicle's greater transmission system. It goes by many names, too: gear knob, gear shift knob, and stick shift knob.
You know it's two jobs, too. One is to provide a better grip on the shifter than a bare gear lever and the other is to display the gears you can shift to (plus the direction/pattern you need to shift in to get there). To change gears, you just grab it, press the clutch (if the transmission's manual), and pull the shifter in the proper direction.
What Do Toyota Shift Knobs Look Like?
A shift knob can be made of nearly anything imaginable from plastic and metal to carbon fiber and more. Many are also covered with additional materials like no-frills vinyl or premium leather. Moreover, you can get a special edition for your vehicle in certain cases beyond the standard issue with some designed specifically for accenting performance vehicles. They can even vary in shape, size, and weight; a weighted shift knob, for instance, can reduce shifting time and effort.
So, what's the best shift knob to get when yours gets too frayed, wears out, or when you want a change of style? You've got a few options. Some are universal, made to fit just about any ride with the right adapter kit, but the genuine OEM article comes custom-fit to Toyota or Scion specs.
